กค Swiss universities and academic degree system |
Swiss institutes for higher education fall into two categories, i.e. universities sponsored by the federal government and whose fiscal and educational plans are directly controlled by the federal government and universities sponsored by the state government and whose fiscal budget and administration are carried out by the state government. However, universities have full control over their teaching and academic research. There are 10 universities in Switzerland that teach in either German or French. In addition, there are also many non-university schools of higher education in Switzerland that teach in Italian. Despite the differences in language and their unique features, all universities have a similar structure. Generally, universities fall into several different schools including schools of theology, law and social science, literature, natural science and medicine, etc. These universities have many research institutes that enjoy a very high level of basic theories. Swiss universities normally have four-year courses except for the 6.5-year medical courses. Students may directly apply for doctorate courses upon graduation. Each academic year consists of two semesters. The winter semester lasts from mid-October until early March while the summer semester lasts from mid-April until mid-July.
Moreover, Switzerland also has some professional institutes that are integrated into university colleges. These institutes are named after the majors they offer with an aim to train professional technicians, e.g. engineers, architects, chemists, economists, administration talents, etc. |
